Easy Kid Recipes

There are many places where your child can learn about food- the classroom, the garden and the grocery store. Although, the most powerful place to develop experience is in the kitchen.

First start by educating your child on the basics of cooking. Refresh on the essential kitchen skills for kids in our prior post, Kitchen Helpers. Once they have mastered hygiene, safety and basic technical skills, they are ready to cook!

Try these 3 simple and healthy snack and meal ideas. Assist your child throughout the process. Encourage them to be safe, creative and have fun!

100% Fruit Popsicles

This recipe is perfect for beating the Arizona heat!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup 100% fruit juice
  • 1 ½ cups frozen fruit
  • 8 three ounce sized dixie cups
  • 8 popsicle sticks
  • foil

In a blender or food processor combine the juice and frozen fruit

Puree until completely smooth and no chunks remain

Divide mixture evenly among the 8 dixie cups

Cover each cup with foil and stick a popsicle stick through the middle of the foil

Place in the freezer until frozen

Once frozen, remove the foil and pull on the popsicle stick to remove it from the cup

Pita Pizza

An imaginative and healthy spin on pizza

 

Ingredients:

  • 4 whole wheat pita rounds
  •  Marinara Sauce Or Pizza Sauce
  •  Pesto (optional)
  • Grated Mozzarella Cheese

Optional Toppings:

  • Onion, sliced
  • Ground Beef
  •  Pepperoni Slices
  •  Canadian Bacon Slices
  •  Pineapple Chunks
  •  Roma Tomatoes, sliced
  •  Black Olives
  • Sliced Bell Peppers

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees

Lay out 4 pita rounds on a cookie sheet

Top each of the pita bread with either marinara or pesto and then add a layer of grated mozzarella cheese

Here is where it gets fun- use your selected topping to create unique pizza combinations!

Once all the pizzas are assembled, put the pan in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes

Remove and serve immediately!

Sandwich Wheels

A fun, easy and nutritious recipes for many ages.

Ingredients:

  • Four 10-inch whole-wheat tortillas
  • 1 small head romaine lettuce, chopped
  • 4 slices of cheese
  • 8 slices oven-roasted deli turkey

Optional Ingredients:

  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Baby spinach
  • Shredded carrots
  • Cream cheese
  • Sliced olives
  • Fresh peppers
  • Mayonnaise and mustard

Lay out tortillas on clean work surface

Spread on any optimal sauces over the tortilla (mayo, cream cheese, mustard)

Place the chopped lettuce, sliced cheese and two slices of deli turkey at the top of the tortilla. Add any additional fillings as well.

Starting at the side with the fillings. Tightly wrap up the tortilla so the fillings are tightly packed inside.

Cut the wraps into 1-inch pieces to create sandwich wheels!
